A Guide for Young Readers Whose Parents May Have Combat Trauma

Look Inside

Written by Sherry Barron
Illustrated by Nick Adducci

Helping My Hero!! is an early-reader book for 4th-6th grade children, whose parent may have combat trauma.

This book tells the story of two military families and their experiences dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Christ-centered solutions are presented for the issues the families face.

The book contains explanations of many of the issues and terminology the children encounter. Scripture verses are highlighted which help the child with the issue addressed in each chapter.

“Discovery” items and “Positive Activities” provide suggestions for taking action. And each chapter ends with a prayer by one of the main characters and his or her promise for action.

This is book two in a series of children’s books produced by Cru Military, a division of Cru. The first book, My Hero’s Home!! is for K-3rd grade children, and the third book, My Hero Hurts!! is for teenagers. All the books follow the same structure used in the book When War Comes Home, by Chris and Rahnella Adsit and Marshéle Carter Waddell, which is a workbook for wives of combat veterans dealing with PTSD or TBI.

With storytelling, guided journaling, and creatively formatted instruction, Helping My Hero!! is a wonderful tool that meets a desperate need. Kids whose parents may have combat trauma no longer need slip through the cracks of our care.
~Jocelyn Green, author of Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives and co-author of The 5 Love Languages Military Edition (with Dr. Gary Chapman)

Battle Ready!! The war cry for many a parent preparing to deploy can now be applied to any child who is also facing a parent’s deployment or return from combat. Helping My Hero!! Is an outstanding book that provides a unique blend of story, facts, practical tools and activities to help 4th-6th Grade children understand what PTSD is and how it affects their parents and families. Along with the practical tools and activities, Sherry Barron provides children biblical answers to deal with their emotions resulting from the secondary effects that PTSD can have on them. This is a must read for children whose parent is deploying or has returned home from combat.
~ Stephen Duke, Lt Col USMC (Retired)

Love, love, love this great activity book which explains to kids on their level about the struggles of PTSD within a family. The bonus is the empowerment of Scripture to give hope in times of sadness and loneliness. This book gives them a voice.
~ Shannon Morell, Military Prevention Specialist
