Hawai‘i Soularium:

The vision of making a Hawai‘i edition of Soularium came in January 2020 when a handful of students and staff from O‘ahu gathered to do Soularium. The group had used Soularium many times prior to this, however, this time, we realized that our group of students and staff did not look like the people on the cards. Although we could answer the questions and have a meaningful conversation, we knew it would be very different if the pictures on the cards resonated more with who we are, and our lives here in Hawai‘i.

Shortly after, the start to capture 50 Hawai‘i relevant pictures began! Amazingly, we had a handful of photographers in Hawai‘i Cru who were excited about this project. After shooting and gathering more than 100 pictures, there was a thorough process of choosing which pictures would make the final cut. We wanted to ensure that the pictures chosen represented the people and places of Hawai‘i as accurately as possible.

What first began as a simple project to contextualize a well-used evangelism tool has now become a tool that would teach others about Hawai‘i and resonate more deeply with people from Hawai‘i, and Asian American Pacific Islander communities. This tool is already fostering meaningful conversations in Hawai‘i, the West Coast, Japan, Fiji, and New Zealand!
